About

Julia Gallagher is an artist whose work attracts a wide range of tastes: those who look for draughtsmanship and illustration will warm to her recognisable subjects of landscape, seascape, townscape and still life; those who prefer abstract and expressive art will find richness of colour, decorative design and expressive paint work.
Julia’s more recent work in which she has specialised in mixed media and watercolour to develop a range of paintings that draw the viewer in by featuring familiar local rural and urban scenes while defamiliarising the imagery through decorative and expressive painterly techniques. In other words the work hovers between abstraction and figuration to foreground issues of ambivalence between the representing and the expressive-decorative functions of art.
