Barbara Rae at Ballinglen Museum of Art

The Ballinglen Museum of Art has recently had an amazing exhibition of Barbara Rae’s works on the West of Ireland, which she made over the last 23 years during annual visits to Ballycastle in Mayo. Rae makes landscapes that weave in ideas about the societies that live in them.

You don’t see people in the work, but Rae’s rich colours and textures incorporate the marks people have left on the landscapes over generations.

I visited in August and was inspired by the work, particularly her incorporation of ordinary objects into the painting.
